Thought I'd let you know that I'm doing a unit on gender issues with my 11th grade students and I came back to this post for ideas. Would you mind if I shared part of your post?
The great thing about ESL at my school is that I really can teach just about any topic I like!

So, from the business owner perspective, I think that a lot of the deal sites really take advantage of small businesses - Living Social takes 30% of the profit from the deal, and Groupon takes 50% (not sure about Scout Mob). So, if you give people $50 worth of food you'd usually charge $100 for (a 50% discount), and Groupon takes 50% of the profit, you're only making $25 from a sale, where you'd normally make $100. Granted, part of the onus is on businesses to price things accordingly and make sure they're covering their costs, but it amounts to a very expensive form of advertising. Businesses are tempted with the idea of luring a bunch of new customers into their business, but how many of those customers are deal hunters, and how many are people like you and David, who'd come back and pay the full price? Personally, I think that these sites are going to have a harder and harder time finding businesses to sign up, because more businesses will realize that it isn't a good deal for them. It's way easier for me to spend $200 on Google Ad Words - maybe I'll get 10 sales out of it (and not hundreds, if we did a Groupon), but 10 sales will easily pay for the cost of the ad, bring me new customers, and won't kill me.
